Cracking the Code
I love turn around stories. You know the kind: everything is going pear-shaped, down the gurgler, and skidding out of control (pick your metaphor here), and then whammo! The planets align, they work through an icy patch, and all of a sudden they’re floating on cloud nine. Breakthrough! (that was 7 metaphors in one sentence in case you didn’t notice – must be some kind of record!)
I had one of these conversations this week with RoseAnna, who has agreed to share her story for the benefit of all and sundry. Buckle your seatbelts, it’s a groovy ride!
6 months ago RoseAnna and I started working together because she was feeling overwhelmed about trying to fit all of her responsiblities in to her day. After a few technical adjustments to her schedule and a re-evaluation of her beliefs around success and intentions, RoseAnna was back on top of her game. She works out twice a day, runs a successful company, and has a well-connected and satisfying social life.
She even took time out to holiday in Mexico this year.
And then in May, everything went quiet. For the first time ever, she started to worry about money. Work prospects were thin on the ground, and she was tapping in to her credit line to pay her bills. RoseAnna was feeling the squeeze. The more she worried, the more money slowed to a trickle. The smaller the trickle, the bigger the worry.
Fast-forward two months. RoseAnna says, “I’m rolling in the dough, working like crazy, and have work booked all the way through to September. I’m even working on a cool movie production set. I’ve got so much work, but it’s all under control.”
So, like, what happened? How did she do it? How did she ditch the money worries and blast the income skyhigh?
RoseAnna tells all:“The Money Mojo stuff kicked in. I had never worried about money before. I always had a good relationship with money. I trusted it would be in my life, and it always was. I trusted work would come to me and it did. When work ran thin I started to doubt and worry. The more worried I got, the less work came in.”
Zoë: So how did you crack the money worry cycle? How did you crack that money code? (I know my readers would want to know this one!)
“I took a realistic look at the flow of money. I realised that I had a credit cushion that would keep me going for 6 months. That took some pressure off me. I also realised that work comes in waves, sometimes it is slow and other times it is like a tidal wave. During the ebbing times, I just need to be mindful of where my cash is going and hold off on some expenses. Really, when I looked at it, I wanted for nothing. I lacked nothing. I was fine.I also started practising some of the techniques you list in Maximise Your Money Mojo . I started really appreciating what money is (energy flow), what money allows me to do (like buy groceries, pay for my house, enjoy a night out). I felt real gratitude for everything I have in my life right now, and stopped taking money for granted. I guess I got real with my relationship with money and it felt really, really good.
I also started to think about the “big picture” in what money actually means… And I realized that for me, money represents the opportunity to work for myself, to have a flexible schedule, to be independent, and live the lifestyle I want. Without money, I would have to go out and “get a job” and once again live by someone else’s working rules. Perhaps for the very first time since I launched my company three years ago, I realized that I loved working for myself, and didn’t want to lose that. So I needed to ensure I would have enough money to be able to continue working for myself.
Zoë: You turned to experience to help provide some of that trust. But what did you do when you first went into business? You had no experience back then to show you it could happen, that your business could work.
RoseAnna: “I trusted in my past experience and skill set. I knew I had a unique skill, and could specialize in two specific industries – music and motion pictures – because of the knowledge I’d gained and networks I had developed the past the years. When I decided to venture out on my own it was a scary leap to take – quitting my job, giving up a great salary, benefits, free downtown parking, and the opportunity to travel. But I just knew that ultimately I would be happier and more prosperous running my own show.”
Zoë: Sounds like you had trust and faith in yourself.
RoseAnna: “Absolutely! I also had that line of credit. I basically lived off that for the first 6 months. I did not have much of an income during that start-up time. Then it all started to roll in. Now I only tap in to the credit during those slower times once or twice a year. Besides, if worse came to worse, I could always get a job again. It was this thought that actually motivated me to do some marketing in May – I realised I really did not want to get a job, so aligned all my efforts with what I did want instead – to run my own show.”
